This course stands out for its comprehensive, practice-oriented approach, offering practical insights while emphasizing immediate skill application in school libraries. It provides a tailored experience for school librarians to enhance their expertise, connect with global leaders in the field, and engage with community-building and networking opportunities, ensuring they are well-prepared to make a meaningful impact in their schools.
The purpose of this course is to enable school libraarians to manage modern school libraries effectively and support student learning. Participants will develop essential skills in organizing resources, promoting literacy, utilizing digital tools, and fostering an inclusive reading culture. The course emphasizes practical strategies for enhancing information literacy, collaborating with teachers, and engaging students. By the end of the course, librarians will be equipped with the knowledge and expertise to lead libraries that inspire a love of reading, meet the needs of both students and educators, and actively support learning achievement.
(1) Learn how to develop policies and ethical guidelines, including copyright compliance, to maintain a responsibly managed library environment.
(2) Understand methods for curating and systematically refreshing a balanced collection that aligns with curriculum and community needs.
(3) Acquire skills to guide students in locating, evaluating, and using information effectively, enhancing research and critical thinking abilities.
(4) Explore digital tools that improve library accessibility and integrate educational technology into library services.
(5) Discover strategies for fostering a reading culture through diverse, engaging activities and creating an inclusive environment that encourages a love for reading among all users.
This course equips librarians with skills to manage dynamic libraries, support learning, and foster a love for reading. Through lectures, projects, and hands-on experience, participants gain knowledge in library management, information literacy, and digital tools. The course covers key topics, including collection development, ethical practices, and collaboration with teachers, while emphasizing the librarian's role in literacy advocacy. By the program’s end, participants are prepared to manage libraries that actively contribute to school-wide literacy and learning goals.
2 hours every 2 weeks over 12 weeks ; online quizzes are embedded within the course;
(1) Current or Aspiring Role in School Libraries.
(2) Commitment to Participation, i.e., attend all sessions, complete assignments, and engage in both online and in-person activities.
(3) Basic Digital Literacy--familiarity with online tools, as the course includes virtual resources and digital platforms.
