Program Description

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design and implement inclusive classroom practices that accommodate diverse learning needs. They will learn to collaborate effectively with colleagues and parents or carers, fostering a strong support network. Additionally, participants will contribute to creating a supportive and inclusive school-wide culture that actively promotes diversity, equity, and accessibility for all students. Through this comprehensive approach, participants will gain the skills and knowledge needed to make a significant impact on their educational communities, ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Purpose

The purpose of this course is to provide educators with a comprehensive understanding of inclusive education, focusing on UAE-specific policies. Participants will learn to assess and adapt instructional practices, implement behavior management strategies, and collaborate with stakeholders. Emphasizing evidence-based approaches, the course covers differentiated instruction, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and practical assessment for learning (AfL) techniques. Through self-reflection exercises, students will enhance their cultural competence, sensitivity, and advocacy for inclusive practices, empowering them to effectively support young learners in diverse educational settings.

Learning Outcomes

(1) Understand what inclusion means for Sharjah and internationally.

(2) Know the vocabulary and definitions around inclusion for consistent approaches across all SPEA/SEA schools.

(3) Identify the characteristics and features of an inclusive classroom environment that fosters academic, social, and emotional development.

(4) Understand how to tailor for the needs of individuals in planning and adaptation, day-to-day lessons, and assessments for learning (AfL).

(5) Explore theories and models of behavior management including behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, and humanistic approaches.

(6) Understand how to deploy additional adults in the classroom environment to suit the needs of all learners.

(7) Develop an understanding of how to work successfully in a partnership with parents/carers by understanding the importance of building positive relationships.

(8) Explore strategies for promoting collaboration, respect, and acceptance among students from diverse cultural, linguistic, and ability backgrounds.

(9) Understand the importance of self-reflection in fostering inclusivity within educational settings.

(10) Understand the principles of inclusive education and how they apply to the school environment, including promoting diversity, equity, and accessibility for all students.

Distinction

This course provides necessary resources for educators to create inclusive learning environments within their classrooms. It covers diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, offering strategies to accommodate diverse needs and ensure equal access to education. Participants learn to identify barriers and implement inclusive practices like Universal Design for Learning and culturally responsive teaching. By the end of this course, educators become confident advocates for diversity and equity in classrooms and beyond.
